48 hours
A weekend in Gordes, counted in the right hours.
Friday late afternoon to Sunday at 11 am. In between: the village after the tour buses, a morning on foot, a single trip by car, and breakfast by the pool. Not a fast-forward tour of the Luberon.
A weekend in Gordes fits into two nights if your room is in the village, or a ten-minute walk from it. Villa Hautvallon is the second case: five rooms, booked separately, in grounds of about two and a half hectares (6 acres), with a heated outdoor pool of 17 × 6 m (56 × 20 ft). Never more than twelve guests. We welcome you in person, between 4 pm and 8 pm. Check-out is at 11 am. A continental breakfast is included and served by the pool.
The rating shown on Booking.com is 9.8/10. It does not replace a plan. Here is ours, for a Friday-to-Sunday stay. A Saturday-to-Monday stay shifts by one day; the market does not shift: it is on Tuesday.
The plan
Friday evening, Saturday, Sunday morning.
Friday — arrive, walk down, dinner
Leave the car in the grounds. Check-in happens in person, not at a key box: you ring at the gate. Between 4 pm and 8 pm, there is enough daylight left, depending on the season, for a first walk. Ten minutes along the route de Murs, the château, the cobbled lanes still easy to walk. After 6 pm, the day’s tour buses have gone. That is the hour described on Gordes without the crowds.
Dinner: a table in the village that we book for you, or dinner at the house when one is planned. Our three tables, about ten minutes on foot: La Trinquette, Beefbar in summer, La Table de la Bastide — the details are on our tables in Gordes. You walk back. The rooms have no kitchen for guests — this weekend is not a rental where you shop for the evening meal.
Saturday morning — the village before 10 am
Breakfast by the water, or a walk first and breakfast when you get back. Before 10 am, you can explore the center without the midday crush. Place du Château, the cellars of the Palais Saint-Firmin if they are open (the hours are posted on site), the cobbled lanes down toward the Calavon valley. Two hours is enough. The Rocher Bel-Air can wait until evening: in the morning, it often belongs to the tour-bus stops.
If your weekend falls on a Tuesday, swap this walk for the market, 8 am to 1 pm. An ordinary Saturday has no market in Gordes. We will not send you to “the Saturday market” in another village without telling you at breakfast: market days move, and that calendar is not printed here.
Saturday afternoon — a single outing
Choose one direction, not three. Sénanque, about fifteen minutes away, if you want the abbey. Roussillon and its ochers, twenty minutes. Lourmarin, thirty-five. L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue or Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, twenty-five minutes. A winery, if you prefer wine to a viewpoint: the five estates, with the addresses we have checked, are on Luberon winemakers. We call ahead for you.
Come back before golden hour. The pool, the grounds, then the village again if the morning was short. A day that is too full misses the evening, and the evening is half the weekend.
Sunday — the garden, then 11 am
Sunday morning is not a second excursion. Breakfast, one last walk down if Saturday was rainy or too busy, bags, check-out at 11 am. The Tuesday market only fits into a Friday-to-Sunday weekend if you stay until Tuesday. Monday nights are booked like any other: just say so when you choose your dates. Avignon is fifty minutes away if your train leaves from Avignon TGV (the station itself is also about 50 minutes from the house). Cavaillon and L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue are about twenty-five minutes away. Marseille-Provence Airport is about an hour and ten minutes, 74 km (46 miles). Leave with a margin: 11 am is not 11:30.
For two, or for twelve
One room, or the whole house.
For two, we point you to the Chambre Provençale (king-size bed, 35 m²) or the Fleurs room (55 m², a terrace under the roses). The version for couples — small attentions, dinner on foot — is the romantic getaway. It is not a different place: it is the same weekend, with the room chosen for two.
For a group, the five rooms sleep up to twelve guests. The Suite des Marronniers (the chestnut-tree suite) sleeps four (95 m² / 1,020 sq ft). You can book one or two rooms, or book the whole house. Reunions have their own page: a stay with friends in Gordes.
Still deciding between a luxury hotel, a guesthouse and a weekly rental? Where to stay in Gordes says it plainly. A single day, with no overnight stay, has its own plan: Gordes in one day.
A room is not the whole house. The other rooms may be occupied: twelve guests at most, five parties at most, the grounds shared, the bathroom your own. If a quiet weekend is the condition, take all five rooms. If you are coming as two and are happy to see other guests at breakfast, one room is enough, and it can be booked on its own. Weekend prices are the ones in the calendar, date by date. We do not copy them here: a rate frozen on a page ages faster than availability does.
Are two nights enough for a weekend in Gordes?
Yes, if you are not trying to cover the whole Luberon. One evening in the village, one morning before 10 am, one place in the afternoon — Sénanque, the bories (the dry-stone huts), Roussillon or a winery — and Sunday morning in the garden. Check-out is at 11 am.
Do you need a car for a weekend in Gordes?
Not for the village or the Tuesday market: the house is about a ten-minute walk away. Yes for Roussillon (20 min), Lourmarin (35 min), L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (25 min) or a winery. Parking on the property is free.
Which room for a weekend for two?
The Chambre Provençale (king-size bed, 35 m² / 375 sq ft) or the Fleurs room (55 m² / 590 sq ft, with a terrace). The five rooms are booked separately. For a weekend with more people, up to twelve guests, the whole house is the other option.
Weekend availability is on each room page, and on the booking page.
