Gordes, like a local

The Gordes market, on Tuesday morning.

A real village market, on Tuesday mornings — and the quiet luxury of walking there from the house, basket in hand, while everyone else is looking for a parking space.

The village of Gordes, a ten-minute walk from Villa Hautvallon

Market day

Tuesday, before nine o'clock.

The market is held on Tuesdays, from 8 am to 1 pm, at the foot of the château (Destination Luberon, January 1 to December 31, 2026). The regulars' hour is before 9 am: the stalls are set up, the producers have time to talk, and the calades (the cobbled lanes) still belong to the people who sleep in the village.

This is where you fill the Provençal basket for your stay — goat cheeses, olives and tapenades, Luberon fruit, honey, lavender in season — and enough for an improvised lunch in the garden when you get back.

Getting there

Walking there changes the market.

Walking down

Ten minutes on foot along the route de Murs, and you enter the village from the top — with no car to park on a busy day.

Browsing

You walk the market with your hands free. A coffee on a café terrace halfway through, the basket filling up at the end.

Walking back up

Back the same way, the village still quiet behind you — and lunch comes together in the shade, in the garden.

Your dates don't include a Tuesday? The neighboring villages each have their own market day — ask us which market fits your day; it is the kind of advice we give at breakfast. The rest of the village, beyond the stalls: things to do in Gordes. To get there before it fills up: Gordes without the crowds.

Practical questions

Before you go.

What day is market day in Gordes?

Tuesday, from 8 am to 1 pm, at the foot of the château (Destination Luberon, 2026 calendar). From Villa Hautvallon you walk there: the heart of Gordes is about ten minutes away on foot.

What time should you go to the Gordes market?

Early. Before 9 am, the market still belongs to the regulars: parking is easy (better still, you come on foot), you talk with the producers, and you choose before the tour buses arrive. In high summer, the middle of the day is crowded.

Do you need a car to get to the market from Villa Hautvallon?

No — that is exactly the advantage of staying a ten-minute walk from the village: you walk down to the market with your hands free and come back up with your basket, without looking for a parking space on market day.
