The hours

Gordes without the crowds is a question of timing.

The village doesn’t empty because someone found a hidden lane. It empties before 10 am and after 6 pm. You still need to stay close enough that those hours don’t mean getting up at dawn and driving.

Gordes at a quiet hour, pale stone and rooftops

Gordes is one of the most visited villages in Provence. Saying so rules out the useless advice: there is no back entrance that cancels out the 11 am tour buses. The tourist office lists it among the Plus Beaux Villages de France (the most beautiful villages of France), and describes a center that is walked, with traffic restricted in season. So the crowds are in the center, at the hours when the buses stop. The rest of the clock is another village.

Villa Hautvallon is about a ten-minute walk away, along the route de Murs. You walk down before breakfast or just after, and come back up when you like. Nobody drives forty-five minutes to be on the Place du Château at 8:30 am. That is the only advantage over the crowds that we claim.

Before 10 am

The calades before the tour buses.

Breakfast is served by the pool, with no buffet window to catch. So you can head out before it and eat when you get back — or the other way around, if the light in the grounds keeps you. Before 10 am, the lanes around the château belong to the people who sleep there and the people opening the shops. The Rocher Bel-Air already gets early stops: we keep it for the evening instead.

On Tuesdays, go an hour earlier. The market opens at 8 am and runs until 1 pm. Before 9 am, the stalls are set up, the producers talk, and the village parking is not yet the issue. Destination Luberon places this market at the foot of the château, free to enter, for the whole of 2026. The story of the basket is on the Gordes market.

In summer, the tourist office says it too: arriving early makes parking easier. If you are not staying in the village, that is the advice. If you are staying here, you don’t have that problem for the market.

After 6 pm

The stone, once the tour buses have gone.

After 6 pm, the center sounds different. The groups that had a visiting slot are on the next bus. The café terraces stay. The Rocher Bel-Air becomes a viewpoint again: the outline of the village on its rock, the Calavon valley, low light on the stone. We don’t give a sunset time. It shifts by two hours between May and October, and an app knows it better than we do.

Dinner comes after this walk, not before. Our three tables are within walking distance — La Trinquette, Beefbar in summer, La Table de la Bastide — about ten minutes along the route de Murs. You walk down, you walk back up, nobody drives. Jean-François books when you tell him in the morning. At the house, on some evenings, a dinner or a barbecue is offered; an outside private chef comes on request. It is not every evening, and it is not a reception.

The page golden-hour villages applies the same principle to Roussillon and Lourmarin, by car, without turning them into village guides.

What doesn’t work

Midday, high season, no night in the village.

Between 11 am and 5 pm, from June to August, the center is the crowded postcard. The paid parking (8 am–7 pm, thirty minutes free, then a rate scale the tourist office publishes) fills up. Driving through the village on a Tuesday morning is exactly what the tourist office advises against. Adding Sénanque at the hour when the tour buses cross paths there too does not “save” the day: the lavender is seen early, and that is written up on lavender without the crowds, with no invented bloom date.

October is the other lever, and it is not a time of day: the village gives itself back, and the house’s rates come down. We have kept it separate so as not to mix two subjects — October in Gordes.

A weekend allows both time slots, Saturday evening and Sunday morning, with a wine cellar or the ocher country in between. The plan is on a weekend in Gordes. The list of what there is to see, without the question of timing, is on things to do in Gordes.

The walk, so there is no ambiguity: from the gate of the house, you reach the center along the route de Murs, about five hundred meters (a third of a mile), around ten minutes, no hiking backpack needed. You pass the large summer parking lot before the village. You don’t have to stop there. On Tuesdays, that lot and the ones in the center fill up because the market runs from 8 am to 1 pm; the tourist office asks visitors not to drive through the village. On foot, the question doesn’t arise.

Check-out at 11 am cuts the second morning short. If you are staying only one night, the crowd-free slot is the evening before, not the next morning. Book accordingly: arriving at 4 pm leaves time to drop your bags and be at the Rocher Bel-Air as the stone turns. Arriving at 8 pm leaves dinner, not the viewpoint. The notes that cover these hours, with the wine cellars and the market, can be downloaded with no sign-up: the guest guide.

What time should you visit Gordes to avoid the crowds?

Before 10 am, and after 6 pm. In the morning, the calades (cobbled lanes) belong to the people who sleep in the village. In the evening, the tour buses have left. In between, in season, the center is crowded — that is not a flaw of the village, it is a timetable.

Is the Gordes market less crowded early?

Yes, before 9 am. The market itself opens at 8 am and runs until 1 pm, on Tuesdays, at the foot of the château. Midday, especially in summer, is the busy time. Coming on foot also spares you the search for a parking space.

Can you avoid the crowds in summer?

The timing, yes. A bloom date or a “secret” village, no: we don’t promise those. Sleeping in Gordes lets you go out before the tour buses and come back after them. October changes the crowds again; that is another page.

Sleep close enough to choose your hour: the five rooms, check-out at 11 am, check-in from 4 pm to 8 pm.
