Lavender, without the crowds.
Sénanque Abbey and its fields are fifteen minutes from the house. The secret isn’t the address — everyone has it. The secret is the hour: being there while the tour buses are still loading in Avignon.
How we do it
Leave early, come back for coffee.
At daybreak
You leave the grounds while the light is still low. Sénanque is about fifteen minutes away: you are there before everyone else, in the quiet the abbey deserves.
The first light
That light is what makes the lavender: the blue rows backlit, no one in your line of sight. An hour later, thirty people are taking the same picture.
The way back
By the time the parking lots fill up, you are back by the pool, breakfast served. The day has barely begun.
For bloom dates and fields beyond Gordes, our neighbors keep a guide updated every year, in French: when to see the lavender in Gordes and Sénanque. We take care of the hour — and the coffee when you get back.
Why it works from here
Ten minutes changes everything.
Getting up at dawn for the lavender is a chore when your hotel is forty-five minutes away. From the house, it is a short outing before coffee. It’s the same idea as the Tuesday market or the village before 10 am and after 6 pm: staying close shifts the hours — and the hours make the experience.
Summer questions
Lavender, in practice.
Where can I see lavender from Villa Hautvallon?
The closest: Sénanque Abbey and its lavender fields, about fifteen minutes from the house. It is the most photographed view in the region — all the more reason to go at a different time from everyone else.
When is the lavender in bloom?
Flowering varies with the year, the altitude and the field — we don’t publish a calendar that would be wrong every other summer. Write to us before you book: we’ll tell you what will be in bloom on your dates, and where to go that morning.
How do I avoid the crowds at Sénanque?
By getting there early — that is the whole advantage of staying ten minutes away. Leave the house at sunrise, see the fields in the first light, and be back for breakfast by the pool as the tour buses arrive.
Next in the journal: October in Gordes, when the region belongs to those who stay.
